Introduction

As students living in Australia Globalisation has impacted on us in many ways. We drink Coke, eat at McDonalds, wear Nike runners and use Nokia mobile phones. We support American Basket Ball teams and English soccer clubs and watch 'Friends' on TV. With all of this in mind it is time to ask ourselves the questions 'What does Globalisation have to do with me?'

Let us begin by looking at what the world would look like if it was a Village made up of 100 people. This provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the world we live in.

Miniature Earth Subject Sampler and take time to consider your personal responses to the questions that are posed.

The Question

The main question you will be asked to find an answer for is:

What is Globalisation and how does it impact on individuals, Australia and the World?

TASK:You have been invited by the Minister of Youth Affairs Jacinta Allan to present a report outlining the views of young people on the issue of Globalisation.

This is being done across all States and Territories of Australia and could influence a report that the Minister is to write for the Federal Standing Committee on Globalisation on whether or not Australia should support a policy of Globalisation.

Background Information

Prior to beginning your formal research on Globalisation, identify the items of clothing that your team are wearing that were made outside of Australia and the food you have eaten recently that comes from another culture. On a map of the world plot the countries that were identified through this process.

You should use a different color to clearly identify food you have eaten and the clothing you wear.

What does this map now tell us about the global influence on our everyday lives? Is there a region that has a greater influence than another?

Group Synthesis

You have made it! Well Done! Each pair within your team has now developed a deeper understanding of some of the key issues that relate to Globalisation. To help you work together and synthesise some of this material the following tasks are to be completed.

STEP ONE:
As a team listen to the debate by students at Carey Grammar School. This may provide you with futher information to inform your final decision.
STEP TWO:
Investigate the multinational companies of Nike and McDonalds. Work together to complete a PMI to identify the pluses, minuses and interestings of these global companies.

STEP THREE
You are now ready to find an answer to the question 'What is Globalisation and how does it impact on individuals, Australia and the World?'.

As a team take the opportunity to categorise your ideas under the headings of Me, Australia and the World using this table to assist you in the process.

You will find that as a result of your research for each role you may already have a clear idea of what Globalisation is and what sort of impact it has on the world. Remember that this task is about being open minded and looking at a whole range of areas that Globalisation impacts on.

STEP FOUR
Ensure that as you begin the teams discussion that you are ready to be convinced of alternate viewpoints. Remember what one person may consider to be a positive may be a negative for another.

To assist you in organising the wealth of material you have discussed use this SWOT Chart. A SWOT Chart is useful to help us analyse the information we have. An awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of Globalisation is important for us to evaluate the impact it has. By identifying opportunities that may exist along with potential threats we are able to develop a well rounded argument.

Us the completed chart to assist you and your team in making a final decision on the impact of Globalisation.

STEP FIVE
You now have the opportunity to put together all your thoughts, ideas, deliberations into a PowerPoint that will be presented to the rest of the class and forwarded to Jacinta Allan.

Take care to address the following as you work together in this final stage:
1.Clearly provide arguments from each of the roles (Economist, Human Rights, Environmentalist and Anthropologist) that support the teams final response.
2. Make use of a wide variety of information such as pictures, movies, facts, opinions, etc that you explored in order to provide clear reasons for the teams final opinion.
3. Provide clear recommendations that the Minister can refer to in relation to whether or not Australia should support a policy of Globalisation.

Conclusion

As we travel and use the internet, sms and chat we are all participating in a global world and will increasingly do so.

Throughout this WebQuest you have had the opportunity to consider the impact that Globalisation has on a number of areas and to consider it from a range of perspectives. This has been achieved through researching individually and looking at the issue from a variety of ways and then by working together as a team to determine a response to the key question.

Hopefully this process will help you be more aware of the world in which you live and inform decisions you make.
